"FORTY FIFTH COMPANY. -- Zetland, 250 souls. It was the intention of Apostle Orson Pratt to have chartered a ship to sail about the twentieth of September, 1849, but he was unable to find one that was suitable, until he had succeeded in chartering the large, new and splendid ship Zetland, which had already brought over one company of Saints before. The fare, including the necessary provisions, was ?3 7 shillings 6 demies for adults; for children under fourteen years, ?2 10 shillings; infants under twelve months, free. The Zetland sailed from Liverpool, November 10th, 1849, with about two hundred and fifty Saints on board, under the presidency of Elder Samuel H. Hawkins, and arrived at New Orleans, December 24th, 1849, with about two hundred and fifty Saints on board, under the presidency of Elder Samuel H. Hawkins, and arrived at New Orleans, December 24th, 1849, all the emigrants enjoying good health and spirits; they were received by the church agent, Elder Thomas McKenzie, who arranged transportation with a number of the emigrants to St. Louis, while others tried to get employment in New Orleans, in order to earn means wherewith to continue the journey. At that time, however, business was very dull in New Orleans, and thousands of able-bodied men were walking about in idleness. The weather was also very warm and sickly. The part of the company which continued the journey up the river, arrived at St. Louis, Missouri, January 11th, 1850. (Millennial Star, Vol. XI, pages 315, 361;Vol. XII, pages 43, 75.)" "November. Sat. 10. [1849] -- The ship Zetland sailed from Liverpool, England, with 250 Saints, under the direction of S. H. Hawkins. It arrived at New Orleans Dec. 24th."

In a letter from Katherine to her mother (Lenore), she writes: "We aren't going to spoil her in fact we're going to be careful to see that other folks don't. She won't be picked up or rocked it would be fun to rock her when she's awake but she will be sweeter without so much attention."
In the early days, Katherine writes of having house-help "a Japanese girl." She came half day every day (2:30 in the afternoon until the dinner dishes are done") and full day on Saturday. They paid her $2.50/week. Katherine writes: "Did you ever hear of anyone working so cheap?" Compare this to a later letter where she complains about the high prices of food. She describes her grocery bill at $35/mo (maybe that's what they could afford?). Says "... I run short sometimes if I don't be awful careful."

Obituary
(Hand Written: Jan. 7, 1894)

SPEIDEL-Another of Black Bock's oldest settlers has gone to join the great majority on the other side of Jordan. Joseph Speidel. was one of the pioneers of Black Rock. and has lived to see the place grow from a wilderness to what it is at the present time. But his call came Monday at 5 p. m., and he passed peacefully away at his residence, 232 Dearborn street. Six weeks before his daughter Lena died, and this seemed to affect him considerably, as he pined away gradually since that time, and three weeks ago took to his bed. At the time of his death he was aged 75 years, 8 months and 10 days. Joseph Speidel was born in Wertemburg [handwritten Alsaise], Germany, but came to Black Eock over 54 years ago, when there was very. little civilization here and before there was, any church. He was married in the o!d St. Louis' church on Main street Sept. 8, 1846. Some years ago he kept a blacksmith shop where Striker's jewelry store now is on Niagara street, between Hamilton and Amherst streets. When St-Francis Xavier's church was built he was one of the leading spirits in the work, and he was a charter member and helped to organize the St. Francis Xavier Aid Society. He leaves to mourn his loss a widow, six sons, and three daughters. One son, Joseph, and two daughters are in California and the other daughter in St, Louis, Mo. The others reside in Black Rock and Buffalo. The funeral took place Thursday, morning, the remains being laid away in the River Road burying ground.

247 Central Baptist Church - Ithamar Conkey was Its First Organist

1891-1925

Plaque was sponsored by members of Central Baptist Church. Church is Located on Union Square. Central Baptist Church was founded in 1840 and under the zeal and energy of Rev. Miner G. Clarke grew rapidly to over 400 members. The church’s first organist, Ithamar Conkey, composed the music to “In the Cross of Christ I Glory” in 1849. William Howard Doane, the prominent hymn writer, was baptized in the church in 1851. The present edifice was constructed on this site in 1891 at a cost of $68,300 and in 1899, Bushnell Chapel, since replaced in 1978, was erected. The present Sunday school, known originally as the “Gilbert Property,” was purchased in 1925 and subsequently joined to the church by an office wing, largely through the efforts of Charles D. and Charles F. Noyes. The cornerstone of the present building was laid in 1891, “that upon it may stand for years to come a temple that shall be open to all who desire to worship the God of our Fathers, whether they be rich or poor, high or low, home or foreign born, and without respect to races or conditions, all shall be alike, welcome.” source: http://wp.theforgottenfounders.com/tag/church-norwich-ct/
