William the Marshal, Earl of Pembroke (via his young wife), Lord of Striguil and Regent of England (in the minority of Henry III) was appropriately eulogized at his funeral by Archbishop Langton of Canterbury who said, "Here lies all that remains of
the best knight of all the world who has lived in our time." William was renown across Europe for his courage, honesty and loyalty to his country, and served with much distinction as a chief officer of several kings. {His biography is "L'Historie
de Guillaume le Marechal," probably written by his squire, John Earley. His life and importance are summarized in "The Magnificent Century," Thomas B. Costain (Garden City, NY: Doubleday & Co., 1951), pp. 41ff.} He fought in more than 500 duels in the
tilting ring and lost none nor was seriously injured in any of the many battles in which he fought. He was in

Robert, "the son of Robert de Bruce VII, earl of Carrick by right of his wife, Marjorie, was a
direct descendant of a Norman baron who accompanied William I to England." - Encycl. Brit.,
'56, 19:347. The earldom of Carrick was resigned to him by his father in 1292, was merged in
the crown of Scotland, and became extinct "with the failure of the royal male line of Bruce."
Robert is reported by "The Bruce Journal" (I:1) to have been born at Writtle Essex, crowned at
Scone 27 March 1306, regained Sotland's independence through victory at Bannockburn in June,

Agnes, known as "Black Agnes," succeeded her two brothers (who died without
heirs) and assumed the title, Countess of Moray, in 1346. Her brother
Thomas, 2nd Earl, died in August, 1332, 23 days after his father; their
brother John, 3rd Earl, escaped to France after Halidon in July 1333, was
regent in 1335, married Lady Euphemia de Ross.

Peerage," I:14. He is first King of the Stuart House. He m. (2) Euphemia of
Ross, dau. of Hugh, Earl of Ross (per "The Bruce Journal," Vol. I, No. 4,
p. 48). He succeeded his uncle, King David II, 22 Feb 1371. With wife
Euphemia, Robert II had David, Earl of Strathbearn and Walter, Earl of
Atholl, and daughters.
